Abstract Text: Scabiosa atropurpurea L. is a biennial herbaceous plant species from the Mediterranean region of southern Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa. This introduced plant has become invasive in parts of the United States, and the species is now reported from 11 counties in north-central Texas. S. atropurpurea reproduces by seed, forming dense colonies along roadsides and old agriculture fields, and may pose a threat to grasslands within the region. This research will establish a clear baseline for future studies by mapping the current distribution of the subject species across north-south and east-west transects through the known distribution. Additionally, soil samples will be collected from 25 roadside locations and compared for differences in texture, pH, and nutrient content. Furthermore, field plots have been established to evaluate whether management techniques (fire, mowing) may impact the spread of S. atropurpurea. Finally, the mean number of seeds per plant will be determined, and the germination rate tested, in an effort to understand the fecundity of the species within its new range.
