Abstract Text: Texas Parks and Wildlife along with eight State, Federal and non-governmental organizations formed the Northeast Texas Conservation Delivery Network (NETXCDN). This conservation effort serves a 27 county area in northeast Texas. Invasive species were identified as a high priority issue that threatens conservation efforts of all partners involved in the NETXCDN. The NETXCDN recognizes that outreach and education is critical to fighting and managing invasive species. With a grant from the USFWS, the NETXCDN was able to partner with Working Dogs for Conservation (WD4C) an organization founded by biologists that uses conservation detection dogs trained to find target species and collect otherwise difficult to find specimens, effectively, efficiently, and ethically. With this grant, WD4C will conduct voluntary searches for zebra mussels on watercraft and ash firewood detection at campsites on public lands. The goal of this project is using the unique attractiveness of conservation dogs to engage the public and educate them about invasive species and to study the feasibility of adding detection dogs to the many efforts to prevent the spread of invasive species in Texas.
