Abstract Title: Invasive, Exotic Plant Eradication Methods Using Volunteer and Inmate Labor in Houston Area Waterways and Watersheds
Abstract Text: Over the past 20 years of active practice, Bayou Preservation Association has developed a method of eradication of invasive, exotic plants from public places using volunteers and inmates to perform the removals. This method leverages the skills of experienced, trained personnel with the efforts of those who are inexperienced. It also uses techniques and herbicides that do not require pesticide applicator licensing, while achieving significant removal rates for restoration of targeted habitats. Bayou Preservation Association has shared this method with other non-profit environmental organizations and local governmental agencies and presented this method to a wide range of environmental professionals. Bayou Preservation Association also hosts a website resource that identifies and suggests specific eradication methods for invasive, exotic plant species in the Houston area.
