Chapter 12: Slide 9 of 11

Signs and Symptoms of EAB

First identify that the dying tree is an ash tree, and then check for the following symptoms:

A. Suckering roots.
B. Canopy die back.
C. Serpentine galleries under the bark.
D. D-shaped emergence holes.

Woodpeckers love EAB, so keep and eye out for increased woodpecker activity.

Note: Any of these symptoms by themselves may be explained by other causes and even other types of insect borers. A combination of these symptoms and general dieback of ash trees in an area provides one clue to the presence of EAB in a site.
