Abstract Title: ARUNDO CONTROL MAN: AN OUTREACH PROGRAM TO COMBAT THE SPREAD OF ARUNDO DONAX. Angela E. England*, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Austin, TX.

Abstract Text: Arundo donax is an aggressive, nonnative, perennial grass that has invaded waterways, riparian areas, and roadside right-of-ways across Texas. Arundo threatens not only the health of our rivers and streams but also our border security. It reproduces primarily by fragmentation, and thus activities such as mowing, tilling, and bulldozing play a large role in its spread. Use of contaminated fill dirt or aggregate materials for bridge or other construction near water has been implicated repeatedly in the introduction of Arundo into Texas’ rivers and streams. The Arundo Control Man program has been developed as an introduction prevention mechanism with a target audience of road and bridge crews, mowers, and fill dirt and aggregate suppliers, and will be delivered as a training program.
