Abstract Title: THE TWO-WAY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AN INVASIVE GRASS, KING RANCH BLUESTEM, AND FIRE. Carolyn Whiting*, Whitney Behr, Alice Oline, Carly Andrews, Elinor M. Lichtenberg, Shalene Jha, and Norma L. Fowler, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX.
Abstract Text: Two separate studies using prescribed fires were conducted to determine 1. how fire characteristics are changed by King Ranch bluestem (Bothriochloa ischaemum var. songarica), and 2. at what time of year prescribed fire can be used to control this invasive grass. Fires were hotter and fuel loads were higher in places with King Ranch bluestem. Prescribed fires conducted in summer and fall drastically reduced the cover of this species, but fires at other times of the year had no effect on King Ranch bluestem.
