Abstract Title: A SURVEY OF BAHIAGRASS (PASPALUM NOTATUM) ACROSS SIX TEXAS COUNTIES. Katherine K. Strain*, Ashley R. Green, Norma L. Fowler, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX.
Abstract Text: Paspalum notatum (Bahiagrass) has been historically and is currently used in Texas as a range improvement grass. Though it is not listed as a noxious weed in the state of Texas, there is evidence that it dominates disturbed areas in the southern United States. We surveyed savanna and grasslands across 15 privately owned sites in Bastrop, Burleson, Brazos, Milam, Fayette and Lee counties during May and June 2018. Paspalum notatum was one of the most common grass species. When Paspalum notatum was present, herbaceous species richness within the plot declined, and it dominated the plot. The prevalence of this species across our sites and how it decreases species richness makes it a threat to native biodiversity.
