Abstract Title: INVASIVE AND EXOTIC SPECIES PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT AT AMISTAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA IN SOUTHWEST TEXAS. Sarah Howard, National Park Service, Amistad National Recreation Area, Del Rio, TX.
Abstract Text: Amistad National Recreation Area, a unit of the National Park Service in Del Rio, Texas, is being stressed by a host of invasive and exotic species and yet still serves as home for hundreds of native and endemic species in groundwater, surface water, and terrestrial habitats. Park staff strive to understand and assist this complex set of ecosystems in recovery from disturbance and resiliency for the future. A new NPS policy for resource management is shifting long-held beliefs that ecosystems can be neatly portioned into natural/wild and “unnatural†ecosystems and instead calls for the protection of ecological integrity in an environment undergoing “continuous and complex change that is not yet fully understoodâ€. Recent projects at Amistad National Recreation Area include testing chemical-free control methods for invasive plants, partnering with remote sensing experts to map giant cane (Arundo donax), and working on long-range planning documents to actively manage 20 invasive species in the park.
