Abstract Title: NOTE: This presentation is part of the Combatting Giant Salvinia at Caddo Lake symposium.” INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT FOR GIANT SALVINIA AND OTHER INVASIVE SPECIES

Abstract Text: Nuisance aquatic vegetation, both native and non-native, can be problematic in Texas’ public water bodies. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages nuisance aquatic vegetation through Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The IPM includes the use of herbicides, biological control agents, and mechanical harvest/shredding. Herbicide treatments are the most efficient and provide the quickest relief. Numerous contact and systemic herbicides are used in TPWD’s IPM with their selection dependent on the management goal for each infested water body. Giant salvinia is the most aggressive and problematic aquatic species in Texas, especially at Caddo Lake. While the cold weather event in January 2018 substantially reduced the amount of giant salvinia in Texas, some salvinia survived and is rapidly coming back. New herbicide combinations as well as experimental use of terrestrial herbicides and endocides show promise in bringing giant salvinia under control.
