Abstract Title: NOTE: This presentation is part of the Combatting Giant Salvinia at Caddo Lake symposium. COMPREHENSIVE EFFORTS TO CONSERVE AND RESTORE CADDO LAKE AND ITS WATERSHED: NON-PROFITS' ROLE IN INVASIVE SPECIES MANAGEMENT. Laura-Ashley Overdyke, Caddo Lake Institute, Shreveport, LA.

Abstract Text: This presentation is part of the Combatting Giant Salvinia at Caddo Lake symposium. The Caddo Lake Institute is the umbrella nonprofit that works with government and the community, to tackle the issues of importance to Caddo Lake. We pursue a comprehensive effort to conserve and restore the lake and the watershed by 1: Ensuring enough water quantity - through historic efforts with the US Army Corps of Engineers (Value of Environmental Flows and possibilities for invasives management) 2: Improving the Quality of Water - monthly water quality testing allows us to address point sources. We will begin more testing to see a link between Nitrogen levels, Salvinia, and even effects of prescribed forest burn, on water quality that is not as conducive to invasive species but still sustains native populations of plants and animals. 3: Addressing Invasive Species: This has been an effort to bring private funding to try out new solution - Mechanical Removal and its difficulties, Different Herbicide applications and development at Institutions of Higher Learning, and Biological Controls - staying in touch with entomologists who are bringing in a new salvinia weevil, and Caddo Lake's efforts to fund a good test and control system for the new weevil. Overall, my talk will show that a non profit, working with those in the community and with government, can bring together funding to address a watershed holistically, and play a role in assisting groups directly fighting invasive species. The non profit may lay the groundwork for government funding by establishing the importance of the watershed as Caddo Lake Institute did by having 20,000 acres declared a Wetland of International Importance.
