Abstract Title: LIONFISH IN THE GULF OF MEXICO: FORMING A COMPREHENSIVE CONTROL PLAN. Leslie D. Hartman, Matagorda Bay Ecosystem Leader, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Palacios, TX

Abstract Text: Lionfish, both Pterois volitans and Pterois miles, are the first invasive marine finfish to become established in the Gulf of Mexico. It has a remarkable life history that ensures this species cannot be eradicated from the Gulf with existing technology. Because Texas must deal with lionfish to preserve its native species and its coastal economies and to protect citizens, the Lone Star Lionfish Symposium (LSLS) was developed. LSLS’s main objective was to generate a Texas-specific response to lionfish in seven topic areas: priority protection areas, outreach efforts, research, policy issues, control and management topics, funding and markets / uses for lionfish. Additionally, LSLS recognized that lionfish will require a multi-disciplinary response. Expertise was sought from the following realms: biological, policy, engineering, outreach and education, marketing and social media, and affected industries. LSLS will form the basis of Texas’ first comprehensive lionfish control plan.
